Hotter than Hamilton, cooler than Come From Away, Merrily We Roll Along is the just the ticket to verily roll away those lock-down blues.
Musical direction by Andrew Worboys has the compact simplicity of five musicians who emulate the big Broadway band sound while balancing the intimacy of a tight jazz quintet, at a volume that enhances rather than upstages the actors.
Musical direction for the production is brilliantly harnessed by Andrew Worboys, who knows exactly how to make everything shine and sparkle, for a welcome return to communal entertainment after many months of sustained isolation. In the many instances when one becomes painfully aware of the unbearable flimsiness of the characters in “Merrily We Roll Along”, there is always Worboys’ omnipotent work to return to, for something to properly sink our teeth into.
THE LOVERS
Featuring original songs and an adapted script by Laura Murphy, The Lovers is a fresh and magical pop-infused reimagining of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Oberon and Puck have devoted centuries trying to craft the perfect happy ending. However, as they look out over an increasingly disconnected world where would-be lovers are afraid to ‘catch feels’ and the path to romance is always one swipe away, Oberon fears there will be no more happily-ever-afters.
Until one day, they happen upon four young lovers.
Directed by Shaun Rennie (Rent, Baby Doll) with a superb cast, a live four-piece band led by Andrew Worboys, and an irresistibly infectious score, The Lovers is a heart-warming and hilarious retelling of Shakespeare’s beloved story that explores the magic and mishaps of romantic love.
